We are enthusiasts of one of the world's most popular houseplants

Do you own an African violet? Perhaps you have one sitting on a window sill that you picked up at a garden center or your supermarket. Like other houseplants, African violets bring the beauty of nature indoors, cleanse the air of toxins, and increase both relaxation and mental focus. But these flowering perennials have special qualities that have endeared them to indoor gardeners for 80 years. If you don't yet own an African violet, you are really missing out! Here are some of the things we love about African violets:

African violets can provide a wide variety of colorful blooms all year round.  As the name suggests, the wild African violets from which modern cultivars are descended have purple blossoms, but the hybrids available today come in a wide variety of bright colors besides purple including reds, blues, lavenders, pinks, and white, as well as bicolors. Recently, hybridizers have managed to produce plants with yellow blossoms.

You get all those flowers at very low cost. You can purchase a mature African violet plant for around $7. Moreover, African violets are easy to propagate from leaf cuttings, so you can get many plants from a single purchase. The suckers that are produced occasionally by well-fed African violets may also be used for propagation. When your African violet "offspring" mature, they make lovely gifts! African violets are traditionally associated with Valentine's Day, Easter, and Mother's Day, and also make charming birthday and housewarming gifts.

African violets do not require direct sunlight to thrive. These plants evolved in the low light conditions of the tropical rain forest understory, and direct sunlight will burn the leaves. As long as they are turned regularly to keep them growing straight, African violets will do well in a south- or west-facing window that has a sheer curtain to filter the light. But they will also be perfectly happy under a desk lamp with a couple of fluorescent bulbs. Compact in size, you can grow a beautiful African violet even in an office cubicle!

BSAVS can help you get the most out of your African violets.

African violets are hardy, resilient plants that can survive a great deal of neglect, but a little care and attention will make a great difference in the quality of your plants and your enjoyment of them.
