Dorothy Raymond Biography

Dorothy Raymond has been growing and exhibiting African violets since the late 1980’s. Her interest was sparked with two Optimara violets on display in a local shopping mall. She attended a violet show in Albany, NY sponsored by The African Violet Society of NY and the Capital District African Violet Society. There she was delighted to discover the wider world of violets – variegates, trailers and miniatures! She joined her local Society and soon the national AVSA. Dorothy’s first exhibit in a show was Optimara Arkansas in the novice class. She won best in class and she was hooked!

The following year led her to try design which included a dish garden, a miniature design, and a mobile design. She was inspired by a program given by the late Vincent Ozimek on mobiles. Dorothy’s design was a trio of planes created from floral tubes. The mobile design exhibit received best flower design, the dish garden received best container garden, and the mini, a red ribbon. She was double hooked! Dorothy has been exhibiting in design classes and horticultural classes ever since.
